Electro House meets performance painting at TEDxVancouver

The third and final act begins with electro-house violin performed live by Dr Draw with special performance painting composition by Pamela Masik “’I see with music, hear in color, I paint what I feel”.

In true confluent thematic, the performers will not have rehearsed and will have never met until converging on stage. Watch two incredibly talented performers create confluence for the first time.

Working on three 8 foot black canvases, Pamela Masik was the focal point of her performance painting in her red dress. On stage with her Dr. Draw reached a house crescendo that had the whole room vibrating. Once reached the music stopped and Masik turned to the audience. An inspiring collaboration and confluence of music and painting creating improvisational art.

TEDxVancouver second act brings you Opera from the Future

The return from lunch begins following a lobby performance by Tambai who treated the crowd to their marimba stylings.

As the crowd settled into the second act it was time for opera from the future. Beginning a cappella, a lyric baritone and classic soprano opera duet will merge mid-composition with two house tracks, two handstand balancers, three contortionists and a silk aerialist.

Opera Soprano, Tiffany Desrosiers, began with an a cappella song from the Phantom of the Opera joined by baritone, DJ Calhoun.

As the vocals reached a crescendo above them a silk aerial artist stunned the audience with his moves high above The Orpheum stage. Artists on stage began to grow as the music began to pick up from DJ SKLA and Inner Ring hand balancing artists took to the stage to show how two people can support one another.

As the music tone changed , three contortionists took to centre stage and wowed the crowd with their choreographed moves and transitions through body position many could never imagine. The creative talents of five very diverse performers coming together for the first time highlights the confluence at TEDXVancouver 2012. This was the first time they performed together.

TEDxVancouver kicks off with Confluence style

To begin the morning, TEDXVancouver presented an “old world, dawning future” mash-up of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. With a Performance that included the house Wurlitzer Organ, a DJ, a ballet dancer and live digital visual artists.

The ominous overture from organist Ay-Laung Wang is joined by an enthusiastic and custom choreographed piece from performers at Goh Ballet. Together the dancers embrace the tone of Confluence and have created an engaging custom choreographed performance before being joined by DJ SKLA and the visuals from Stuart Ward.

This performance set the tone for the day as TEDXVancouver 2012 Host, Riaz Meghji, took to the stage to begin the morning session of speakers.

Welcome to TEDxVancouver 2012: Understanding the nametags system

TEDXVancouver’s 2012 theme is Confluence. Confluence is defined as the coming together of people or things and the junction of two or more streams flowing together. For Sunday, October 21st, the team at TEDXVancouver has assembled an eclectic mix of speakers and artists for the varied registered attendees. Lanyards with nametangs at TEDXVancouver 2012 will highlight the confluence structure of registrants using a simple symbol system.

There are three types of people at TEDXVancouver; Hubs, Connectors and Endpoints. Each of you are the starting points of the interconnected web and culture of TEDXVancouver.

On your lanyard you will find anywhere from one to three symbols. The shaded shape on your lanyard above the line represents you as a Hub, Connector or Endpoint. Everyone attending TEDXVancouver has played a role in connecting individuals to this experience.

Hubs are represented by hexagons and symbolize the connection of these individuals to a wide range of others and have played a significant part in today’s event.  They are those which bring us together today through being a performer, speaker or a member of the Organizing Committee.

Connectors are represented by circles and symbolize those who are part of the TEDXVancouver network and have invited others to connect to this experience.

Diamonds are endpoints in the TEDXVancouver network. They received an invite to attend the event but did not have an opportunity to invite others.  In the TEDXVancouver network they are an end node.

Here is an example of how to read your lanyard.

TEDXVancouver 2012 Lanyard Connector

Chris is a Connector, part of the TEDXVancouver network. He is connected to Jie, who is also a connector.

TEDXVancouver 2012 Lanyard

Chris is a connector, part of the TEDXVancouver network. He has invited Jie who is an Endpoint. Jie is an ending node in the connected network of TEDXVancouver.

TEDXVancouver 2012 Lanyard Connectors

For this lanyard, Chris is the connector indicated. Below the line is his fellow Connector Jie who is Chris’ first invited guest. The second Jie is then Chris’ second invited guest who is an Endpoint in the TEDXVancouver network.

TEDXVancouver 2012 HUB Lanyard

The Hexagon symbolizes Hubs. Chris is a hub in the TEDXVancouver network and is either a performer, speaker, sponsor or part of the organizing committee. May of these Hubs have invited large numbers of guests and are critical hubs of connection within the TEDXVancouver network.

We are excited to welcome you to TEDXVancouver 2012. Look around, notice the confluences and see how connected we really are.
